Medic cu preocup\u0103ri enciclopediste precoce \u0219i multiple, premiat \u00een 1921 (al\u0103turi de Mircea Eliade) de <em>Ziarul \u0219tiin\u021belor populare \u0219i al c\u0103l\u0103toriilor<\/em>, publicist prodigios, cu colabor\u0103ri sus\u021binute la <em>Bilete de papagal<\/em> \u0219i <em>Universul literar<\/em>, specializat \u00een psihiatrie (Fran\u021ba), de unde se \u00eentoarce avizat inclusiv \u00een suprarealism \u0219i psihanaliz\u0103. \u00cen studen\u021bie se apropie de mi\u0219carea na\u021bionalist\u0103 (v. \u0219i bro\u0219ura <em>Contribu\u021bii la defini\u021bia na\u021bionalismului<\/em>, 1928), cu care intr\u0103 \u00eens\u0103 repede \u00een conflict; la \u00eenceputul anilor 30 (aflat la Paris) \u00eel \u00eent\u00eelnim printre altele ca mediator \u00eentre literaturile francez\u0103 \u0219i rom\u00e2n\u0103, colaborator la publica\u021bii rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti \u0219i franceze. Un reper important e volumul de studii asupra literaturii rom\u00e2ne contemporane, scris \u0219i editat \u00een limba francez\u0103, <i>\u00c9tudes sur la litt\u00e9rature roumaine contemporaine\u00a0<\/i>(1934), bine alc\u0103tuit \u0219i cu judec\u0103\u021bi valide. \u00cen 1945 va publica \u0219i un volum de <em>Profiluri literare franceze<\/em>, \u00een oglind\u0103 fa\u021b\u0103 de cel din 1934. Replici \u00een oglind\u0103 va mai avea: av\u00e2nd la origine o experien\u021b\u0103 toxicoman\u0103 proprie, eseul antropologic <em>Thanatos<\/em> (1936), care \u00eel face destul de popular \u00een epoc\u0103, are un corespondent peste decenii \u00een volumul <em>Eros<\/em> (1974), iar culegerea de interviuri <em>Lumea de m\u00eeine<\/em> (1945), document de prim-ordin pentru speran\u021bele intelighen\u021biei umaniste rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti din perioada imediat postbelic\u0103, are o replic\u0103 peste timp \u00een interviurile reunite \u00een mai pu\u021bin relevantul <em>Lumea de azi<\/em> (1980). Autor prolific de biografii \u0219i monografii de popularizare cu obiecte uluitor de diverse (despre Breughel, Tolstoi, Tudor Vianu, Ion Sava, Arta suprarealist\u0103&#8230;). Viziunea antropologic\u0103, inter- \u0219i transdisciplinar\u0103 a acestui foarte bun \u0219i cultivat comentator de literatur\u0103, prezent\u0103 inclusiv \u00een studiile \u0219i eseurile despre literatur\u0103 reunite \u00een numeroase volume, n-a fost suficient subliniat\u0103, de\u0219i face din el un premerg\u0103tor autohton. A scris&#8230; dar despre ce n-a scris: despre vis \u0219i structurile subcon\u0219tientului, despre art\u0103 (fie ea renascentist\u0103, fantastic\u0103 sau suprarealist\u0103), despre studiul eredit\u0103\u021bii \u0219i psihologia antropologic\u0103, despre \u201eindividualitate \u0219i destin\u201d sau \u201evia\u021b\u0103 \u0219i moarte \u00een evolu\u021bia universului\u201d, despre \u201earta de a tr\u0103i\u201d \u0219i \u201econdi\u021bia uman\u0103\u201d, dar \u0219i \u201earta de a scrie \u0219i de a vorbi \u00een public\u201d, despre \u201epoezie ca mod de existen\u021b\u0103\u201d \u0219i despre \u201e\u00eentreb\u0103rile ultime\u201d, dintr-o perspectiv\u0103 umanist-integratoare \u0219i nu (doar) popularizatoare, stimulat\u0103 de J. Huizinga \u0219i Ernst Cassirer. Comentator neobosit, cu o deschidere de compas deconcertant\u0103, a scris despre literatura de limb\u0103 francez\u0103, german\u0103 \u0219i englez\u0103, despre mai toate direc\u021biile clasice, romantice, moderne \u0219i avangardiste, despre Joyce \u0219i Musil, Urmuz \u0219i Breton, Kafka \u0219i Thomas Mann etc. etc. \u00a0A alc\u0103tuit &#8211; \u00een BpT &#8211; \u0219i o antologie de nuvel\u0103 romantic\u0103 german\u0103. Ca prozator a fost un experimentator \u0219i un ferment, realiz\u0103rile fiind notabile mai mult \u00een inten\u021bie. Cel mai cunoscut roman, <em>Proces<\/em> (1935), inspirat tematic de Kafka \u0219i definit compozi\u021bional pe \u00eentreaga \u00eentindere de monologul interior joycean, urm\u0103re\u0219te cazul de con\u0219tiin\u021b\u0103 al unui acuzat; nuvelele din<em> Cercuri \u00een ap\u0103<\/em> (1939) investigheaz\u0103 devia\u021bii psihologice, cu deschideri spre fantastic. De altfel, Joyce e o pasiune mai veche, care l-a adus \u00een conflict cu Camil Petrescu \u00eenc\u0103 din 1922. <em>Un om \u00ee\u0219i tr\u0103ie\u0219te via\u021ba<\/em> (1946) are caracter de bildungsroman autobiografic, cvasi-eliadesc, <em>Luminile capricornului<\/em> cocheteaz\u0103 cu nara\u021biunea SF, iar <em>Destinul Aisei<\/em> (1983) e un roman \u201eal cuplului conjugal\u201d, f\u0103r\u0103 pregnan\u021b\u0103. Un roman \u00een francez\u0103, <em>Effondrement<\/em>, s-ar fi pierdut \u00een bombardamentele din aprilie 1944.
