Lovinescu s-a str\u0103duit s\u0103 vad\u0103, \u00een anii 20, o alternativ\u0103 \u201eobiectiv\u0103\u201d la antipatizatul I. L. Caragiale. N-a reu\u0219it s\u0103 devin\u0103 dec\u00e2t o alternativ\u0103 sbur\u0103torist\u0103 la D. D. Patra\u0219canu \u0219i s\u0103 propun\u0103 o variant\u0103 optimizat\u0103 la proza cazon\u0103 a lui Anton Bacalba\u0219a. Cu o educa\u021bie militar\u0103 perfec\u021bionat\u0103 \u00een Fran\u021ba, lupt\u0103tor \u00een Legiunea Str\u0103in\u0103 (doi ani \u00eei petrece \u00een Algeria), devenit subofi\u021ber de infanterie \u0219i profesor la \u0219coala de ofi\u021beri din Bucure\u0219ti (unde public\u0103 o bro\u0219ur\u0103 despre \u201eeduca\u021bia social\u0103 a na\u021biunii armate\u201d), se \u00eenroleaz\u0103 pe frontul Primului R\u0103zboi Mondial unde, r\u0103nit, \u00ee\u0219i pierde bra\u021bul drept, fiind, \u00een plus, internat \u00een lag\u0103re din Germania. Curios, aceste experien\u021be traumatice \u00eei stimuleaz\u0103 apetitul pentru proza umoristico-satiric\u0103 din lumea militar\u0103. Piesa de rezisten\u021b\u0103 \u201eVine doamna \u0219i domnu gheneral, care d\u0103 titlul primului s\u0103u volum de proz\u0103 (1818), e istoria comic\u0103 a a\u0219tept\u0103rii paroxistice, \u00eentr-un or\u0103\u0219el meschin de la Dun\u0103re, a vizitei m\u0103re\u021bului cuplu, preg\u0103tite \u00een crescendo de notabilit\u0103\u021bile urbei, dar care, finalmente, nu mai are loc, spre dezastrul iluziona\u021bilor. Tehnica anticlimaxului \u0219i a frustr\u0103rii a\u0219tept\u0103rii va fi folosit\u0103 cu dezinvoltur\u0103 de Br\u0103escu \u00een multe dintre piesele sale, scrise cu verv\u0103 \u0219i inteligen\u021b\u0103 narativ\u0103. Membru de baz\u0103 al cenaclului \u201dSbur\u0103torul\u201d, va \u00een\u0219ela, totu\u0219i, a\u0219tept\u0103rile maestrului \u00een momentul trecerii la roman, pentru care nu avea, \u00een mod evident, voca\u021bie: diluatul <em>Mo\u0219 Belea<\/em> (1927), istorie a dec\u0103derii unui ofi\u021ber, putea r\u0103m\u00e2ne o povestire onorabil\u0103, ca \u0219i minor-truculentele <em>Cona\u0219ii<\/em> (1935), <em>Primii \u0219i ultimii pa\u0219i<\/em> (1939) \u0219i <em>Margot<\/em> (1942), iar \u00eencerc\u0103rile dramatice (<em>Ministrul<\/em> \u0219.a.) pot fi ignorate. \u00cen schimb, culegerile de schi\u021be \u0219i povestiri sunt, de cele mai multe ori, delectabile, chiar dac\u0103, \u00een raport cu b\u0103tr\u00e2nul Caragiale, reprezint\u0103 doar o felie dintr-un tort.<em>Maiorul Bo\u021ban<\/em> (1921), <em>Cum sunt ei&#8230;<\/em> \u0219i <em>Doi vulpoi<\/em>, <em>Schi\u021be umoristice<\/em> (1923), <em>Schi\u021be vesele<\/em>, <em>Nuvele <\/em>(1924), <em>Un scos din pepeni<\/em> (1926), <em>Alte schi\u021be vesele<\/em> (1926), dar mai ales remarcabila <em>La clubul decava\u021bilor<\/em> (1929). Nu pu\u021bine dintre piesele componente, unele \u2013 dramatizabile sunt texte de antologie, exploat\u00e2nd abil comicul confuziilor \u0219i demascarea lipsei de scrupule de sub aparen\u021be conven\u021bionale rudimentare: truculenta <em>Ra\u021be cu repeti\u021bie<\/em>, sarcastica\u00a0 <em>Legea progresului<\/em>, satira didactic\u0103 <em>Metod\u0103 nou\u0103<\/em>, dar \u0219i caragialiana <em>\u021a\u0103ranii no\u0219tri<\/em> sau blajina <em>Mo\u0219u,<\/em> despre automatismele unui senil. Schi\u021ba <em>doi vulpoi <\/em>va fi ecranizat\u0103, \u00een anii comunismului, \u00eentr-o interpretare magistral\u0103 (cu Dem R\u0103dulescu \u0219i Vasile Muraru \u00een roluri de zile mari) \u0219i \u00eentr-o variant\u0103 mult mai reu\u0219it\u0103 dec\u00e2t originalul. O alt\u0103 fa\u021b\u0103, tandru-bonom\u0103, de evocare poetic\u0103 a copil\u0103riei pierdute, \u00eent\u00e2lnim \u00een fermec\u0103torul <em>Amintiri <\/em>(1937), comparabil cu <em>Lume de ieri<\/em>&#8230; a congenerului I. A.
