S-a n\u0103scut la Ia\u0219i pe 5 septembrie 1921. Publicat\u0103 postum abia \u00een 2010, la indica\u021bia autorului, controversata\u00a0 autobiografie intelectual\u0103 <em>Via\u021ba unui om singur<\/em>, arat\u0103 un caz oedipian dramatic. Discipol al lui G. C\u0103linescu, la al c\u0103rui <em>Jurnal literar <\/em>a debutat \u00een 1939 \u015fi al c\u0103rui asistent a fost \u00eentre 1945-1947 (c\u00e2nd \u00eencepe \u0219i o tez\u0103 de doctorat despre Macedonski), se afirm\u0103 ca foiletonist \u0219i eseist speculativ, iubitor de valori clasice. Dup\u0103 reprimarea stalinist\u0103 (acuzat de ac\u021biuni cladestine \u00een contul Tineretului Na\u021bional \u021a\u0103r\u0103nist), va fi de\u021binut politic vreme de un deceniu \u0219i deportat \u00een B\u0103r\u0103gan, la L\u0103te\u0219ti, unde ajunseser\u0103 Goma \u0219i Ivasiuc. La \u00eentoarcere, C\u0103linescu \u00eel respinge \u0219i fostul discipol, revoltat, \u00eel reneag\u0103: printr-o psihologie inversat\u0103, fostul foiletonist eseizant devine un erudit antic\u0103linescian, militant anti-tradi\u021bionalist \u0219i anticlasic, anti-impresionist, anti-foiletonist, metateoretic \u0219i metacritic, preocupat de comparatism \u0219i universalizarea literaturii, nu de administrarea ei na\u021bional(ist)\u0103. Cu sprijinul logistic al so\u021biei, universitara Lidia Bote, debuteaz\u0103 editorial impetuos: cele dou\u0103 sinteze cvasi-exhaustive despre via\u021ba (1966) \u0219i opera (1967) lui Macedonski, cu al c\u0103rui donqui\u0219otism modern se identific\u0103 (au \u0219i acelea\u0219i ini\u021biale) sunt cele mai solide c\u0103r\u021bi despre, pandant la monografiile c\u0103linesciene despre Eminescu. Prin acreditarea masiv\u0103 a \u00eent\u00e2iului nostru modernist, pe care l-a \u0219i editat, Marino inaugureaz\u0103 direc\u021bia propriului militantism modern, ra\u021bionalist, iluminist-universalist. Scolastic \u00een afara universit\u0103\u021bii, devine un propov\u0103duitor al criticii de idei, riguros-sistematice. <em>Introducere \u00een critica literar\u0103<\/em> (1968), <em>Modern, modernism, modernitate<\/em> (1971), wellekianul volum-matrice <em>Dic\u021bionar de idei literare<\/em> (A-G) (1973), referen\u021biala <em>Critica ideilor literare<\/em> (1974), al\u0103turi de mai t\u00e2rzia, edificatoarea <em>Hermeneutic\u0103 a ideii de literatur\u0103<\/em> (1987) prefigureaz\u0103 ciclopica <em>Biografie a ideii de literatur\u0103<\/em> (\u0219ase volume, 1991-2000). Reabilitat, r\u0103m\u00e2ne liberprefesionist cu statut special: membru USR, bursier Pro-Helvetia la Geneva, membru, \u00eentre 1977 \u0219i 1983, globetrotter ca membru al conducerii International Comparative Literature Association \u0219i al Asocia\u021biei Interna\u021bionale pentru Studiul Secolului al XVIII-lea, laureat Herder, colaborator la reviste \u0219i volume mondiale de anvergur\u0103 (cele despre avangard\u0103 din 1984, ap\u0103rute la Budapesta), autor de lucr\u0103ri teoretice (<em>Hermeneutica<\/em> lui Mircea Eliade, 1980, <em>Etiemble ou Le Comparatisme militant<\/em>, 1881, <em>Comparatisme et theorie de la litterature<\/em>, 1988) \u00een care modele de succes sunt accesate pentru a legitima propria op\u021biune pentru un comparatism universalist-ecumenic, pe modelul Rene Wellek-Rene Etiemble, dep\u0103\u0219ind opozi\u021bia centru vs. periferie \u0219i privilegiind invarian\u021bii \u00een fa\u021ba influen\u021belor. Va fi, ca ini\u021biator al revistei plurilingve <em>Cahiers roumains d`etudes litteraires<\/em> (1971-1980), unul din principalii ambasadori ai liberaliz\u0103rii post-staliniste. Jurnalele intelectuale de c\u0103l\u0103torie (<em>Ole! Espana!<\/em>, 1974, <em>Carnete europene<\/em>, 1976, <em>Prezen\u021be rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti \u0219i realit\u0103\u021bi europene<\/em>, 1978) sunt autodefiniri trepidante. A publicat \u0219i sinteze pentru export, av\u00e2nd, \u00eentre criticii r\u0103ma\u0219i \u00een Rom\u00e2nia, ecoul interna\u021bional cel mai amplu. Au existat suspiciuni rezonabile privind folosirea sa ca agent de influen\u021b\u0103 al regimului Ceau\u0219escu. Fostul \u021b\u0103r\u0103nist, devenit liberal sub acoperire marxist\u0103, intr\u0103 dup\u0103 1990 \u00een PN\u021a-CD (fiind aleergic la ortodoxism, ruralism sau conservatorism) \u0219i, sub umbrela Forumul Democratic Antitotalitar, mo\u0219e\u0219te Alian\u021ba Civic\u0103, \u00eenainte de a se retrage, dezam\u0103git, din politic\u0103. Conflictul cu mo\u0219tenirea \u201einterbelic\u0103\u201d a lui Noica a generat dispute \u00een r\u00e2ndul intelectualit\u0103\u021bii de dreapta. Fondeaz\u0103, \u00eempreun\u0103 cu Paul Cornea, Asocia\u021bia Rom\u00e2n\u0103 de Literatur\u0103 General\u0103 \u0219i Comparat\u0103, public\u0103 o sintez\u0103 despre cenzur\u0103 \u00een Rom\u00e2nia (mai avea \u00een proiect una despre ideea de libertate) \u0219i culegeri de eseistic\u0103 polemic-ideologic\u0103 (<em>Pentru Europa: integrarea Rom\u00e2niei. Aspecte ideologice \u0219i culturale<\/em>, 1995, <em>Politic\u0103 \u0219i cultur\u0103. Pentru o nou\u0103 cultur\u0103 rom\u00e2n\u0103<\/em>, 1996), \u00ee\u0219i face mul\u021bi du\u0219mani, dar \u0219i admiratori \u2013 \u00een special optzeci\u0219ti.\u00a0 Situat de la \u00eenceput \u00een afara disputei dintre protocroni\u0219ti \u0219i sincroni\u0219ti, va lansa, \u00eentr-un incitant volum-dialog cu Sorin Antohi (2001), ideea unui \u201eal treilea discurs\u201d, apt s\u0103 dep\u0103\u0219easc\u0103 opozi\u021bia steril\u0103 dintre cosmopolitismul occidentalist \u0219i autohtonism. Ideologul liberal dezvoltase o fobie la adresa impresionismului foiletonist \u0219i eseizant, a ira\u021bionalismului, ruralismului \u0219i na\u021bionalismului, f\u0103cute responsabile de provincialismul culturii autohtone. Personalitatea accentuat\u0103 l-a f\u0103cut s\u0103 r\u0103m\u00e2n\u0103 \u00eens\u0103 un \u201eom singur\u201d. Un savant universalist, impresionant nu prin rezultatele teoretice (banale) ci prin erudi\u021bia creatoare sistematic\u0103 \u0219i enciclopedic\u0103, irigat\u0103 de subiectivitate polemic\u0103. Dac\u0103 G.
